Making tax digital (MTD)

Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced their plan to make tax digital by 2018. Under this new scheme, people will have online tax accounts that track their professional and business transactions automatically. These accounts will be submitted quarterly to HMRC to help estimate the taxes due.

Making tax digital has three important distinctions:

1. Bank transactions and other financial information will flow automatically into people’s digital tax account, whether or not they declare that income or those expenses.

2. Submissions will need to be made at least once per quarter.

3. Submissions will need to be filed using some form of software (you’ll need to use an app that is integrated to your digital tax account).

We can still service standalone bookkeeping software. However, we envisage this sort of bookkeeping will be phased out/ not fit for purpose in the very near future. Our team can provide advice on a range of cloud based solutions which can help future proof your business for Making Tax Digital filing requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

This all depends on both your personal and business needs. If you are an individual who is in need of personal financial advice, you’ll only need to see an accountant once a year. If it’s a small business that you’re running, then you may just need help from someone for your annual tax returns. You can contact our professional team regarding your accountancy needs. We’ll consider the length of the service and how often we will need to be in contact with you.

We’ll need a brief review of both your books and records. This is to work out what services are necessary. We’ll also need to be provided with a copy of your last financial accounts from your current accountant. This is to ensure that all of the relevant information is considered before we start with your advice.

The cost will vary depending on your requirements. As well as the practices of the firm as well as the individual that you choose, your requirements and aims of the accountancy service. When it comes to larger jobs with more complex financial accounts this will cost much more, M. Wasley Chapman & Co’s professional accountants will consider your requirements as well as provide you with an estimate.

At M. Wasley Chapman & Co, our professional accountants will ensure that each and everyone of our customers receives a professional service. We’ll also make sure that they stay up to date on the correct accounting laws and legislation. This is to ensure that you receive the best accountancy service for all of your requirements. Our services are known across the local area, including Scarborough, Guisborough, Saltburn and the rest of the North East, and we have a great reputation for our accountancy knowledge and bookkeeping expertise.

Whilst there are some similarities between the services offered by an accountant and a bookkeeper, whilst they’re different roles, they’ll also bring something different to your company. A bookkeeper will have control over the administrative side of your business and an accountant will specialise in more analytical services as well as work with the data from the bookkeeper in order to drive down the figures and provide you with more information on your financial position.
